While we have updated many of the spaces in our restoration program, the family room in Harbor Home basement presents an opportunity for a significant improvement that would offer residents a more enjoyable, organized space that reflects their value. Residents use the family room daily for games, movies, and some crafts, but we envision a space that is beautifully furnished with colors and lighting that contribute to a sense of wellness and peace.

We also want to provide residents with organized game, music and craft areas where they can pursue community and creativity. Funds would create a fully equipped craft and arts area, an inviting musical area, and a comfortable movie and game space. Volunteers would have a space to provide art, craft, and music lessons, and residents would have access to more activities.

During early weeks in the program, when residents often are unable to feel safe in public spaces, and during winter months that limit outdoor opportunities, an inviting, well-organized family room will make all the difference to the residents’ community experience. We would also include sensory-friendly accessories that would provide a calming space for residents experiencing dysregulation. The program director would work with a clinical workgroup to create a healing, sensory experience, while residents would provide input to the overall content and layout of the new space.

For individuals living with complex trauma who feel the effects of their trauma responses in their body, a therapeutic space with effective sensory inputs (how it feels, how it looks, how it sounds, and specialized furniture to help with relaxation) is proven to be a beneficial way to reduce reactions to trauma triggers and calm oneself.

Every resident at North Star deserves a space where they feel calm, safe, and understood.

Help us turn this vision into a reality.
